Evy, born in Canada in 1946, is the daughter of Igor and Svetlana Gouzenko. Igor was a Soviet cipher clerk stationed in Ottawa who defected to the west three days after the end of the Second World War with 109 classified documents.
Approximately 75 appreciative attendees had the opportunity to hear Evy talk about her youth and growing up with her family in a witness protection program. RMIM President Barb Gillis was one of about 120 guests, including Lt-Governor Anita Neville, invited to attend a presentation and the unveiling of a Special Operations Executive (SOE) plaque to be mounted on the Wall of Honour at the Manitoba Legislature.
The well-organized event, which took about four years to research and plan, featured information presented by LCol Robert Nash, retired, and others on the 27 Manitobans being honoured. The occasion was a fitting tribute to commemorate the contributions of these individuals in support of extraordinarily dangerous SOE operations during the Second World War. Only four of this group of Manitobans survived the war. About half the audience comprised descendants of the 27 individuals.
